Living in Sherborn-FarmPondOne of the things that attracted me most about living in Sherborn MA was its commitment to creating a sustainable, environmentally sound community. Happily, many Sherborn residents are quite interested in environmentally-friendly living.

Open space in Sherborn

More than 50 percent of land in our town has been set aside for open space, so there are wonderful trails, as well as Farm Pond, to explore.

Environmental education at Dover-Sherborn High School

At Dover-Sherborn High School, students can take an elective course in environmental research, where they have an opportunity to explore chemical and biological techniques employed in current enviornmental research, and carry out their own research investigations dealing with water quality analysis, food quality, air pollution, energy use, argiculture, and other related environmental issues. In addition, Sherborn Public Schools adopted an organic lawncare policy to reduce the use of chemicals.

Sherborn’s new Energy Committee

As part of our goal to create a more sustainable community, our Board of Selectmen recently created our town’s new Energy Committee. I’m very excited to be a member of this brand new committee. One of our first goals is to gain designation as a “Green Community”. Not only will this get Sherborn on the path to reduced pollution and energy consumption, it will open up new financial opportunities as well.

Municipalities that meet five clean energy goals under the Green Communities program are eligible for millions in local aid. Sherborn resident and Energy Committee member John Higley already took the initiative to ride his bike from Sherborn to Boston to hand deliver the town’s application to the state for an advisor to assist with the project. I’m happy to report that we’ve already been notified that Sherborn will receive assistance from the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources to support our Green Communities goal.

Please feel free to contact me if you’d like to learn more about living in Sherborn MA or the Green Communities program.
